Introducing the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck
Posted on March 12, 2020
Pickup trucks, despite their incredible popularity and sales figures, don't tend to get substantially updated as much or as frequently as sedans, hatches, coupes and SUVs do. That means when an all-new version of one of our favorite pickups gets redesigned virtually from the ground up, it really is a pretty big deal. Well, that's what's happening to the 2019Ram 1500, so let's take a look at it in a little more detail to see what the legendary truck manufacturer is treating us to this time around.
Exterior styling
For some time now, the Ram pickup trucks have had one of the most distinctive front fascias in the segment, and to some degree that remains the case with this heavily redesigned new model. But while the current version is one of the most brutish and aggressive designs in its class, the 2019 model now looks cleaner and sharper, with less aggressive wheel arches and a taller bed that has the added benefit of improving the truck's aerodynamic efficiency. The crosshair grille has now been consigned to history, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your point of view. It's now been replaced with a sleeker grille with a "Ram" logo centered in the middle that's been borrowed from the outgoing Rebel and Limited Ram trucks of last year's model. The new model is probably a little less distinctive, but it will definitely have greater appeal now for the droves of buyers looking to buy a pickup as their daily driver.
Interior
Inside the 2019 Ram 1500 the designers' mission is exposed even clearer with an updated cabin that has a keen focus on interior storage and technology. Ram likes to make models a little distinct from each other in terms of some styling elements, and it achieves it here with a somewhat customized interior for each Ram 1500 trim level. Each one gets a different look and feel throughout the interior, which reflects the place in the lineup of that particular grade. When it gets towards the top end of the trim levels, the Limited is awash with technology features and smart storage bins, which are then complemented by soft leathers and an available 12-inch touchscreen that's extremely impressive and dominates the dash.
Engines
The same two engines return this time around, which means buyers still have the choice of a 3.6-litre V-6 or a 5.7-litre Hemi V-8. But in a somewhat revolutionary move, both engines come paired to a 48-volt mild hybrid system Ram calls eTorque. The battery pack and electronic motors that make up the system are part of the standard equipment on all V-6 models, but they can be removed from V-8 versions if the buyer prefers for some reason.
Capability
Compared to the previous model, almost 102 kg of weight has been removed from the Ram 1500, which is largely courtesy of a new frame made of around 98 per cent high-strength steel to improve durability and rigidity and reduce weight for improved handling. This is now the strongest 1500 Ram has ever produced, with the most advanced frame in the segment and featuring an exclusive splayed rail design. What this means in terms of capability is the Ram 1500 will now have a maximum payload of some 1,043 kg, and a maximum trailer rating of 5,761 kg.
