2019 Dodge Grand Caravan Vs. 2019 Honda Odyssey
Posted on January 15, 2021
People who could quite easily get by in their life with a two-seat roadster are not likely to be considering buying a minivan anytime soon. What we mean by this is people tend to buy minivans because they need them and that nothing else does the job of carrying more than five people and all their gear as efficiently, as capably and in such a versatile way as a family minivan. Some large SUVs and crossovers can do the job, but none are as versatile as a minivan and most will be pricey.
The minivan segment has contracted in recent years, but the Dodge Grand Caravan has been there since the start and all the contenders have been improving. To see how well the 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan stacks up against the competition, let's put it head-to-head with the 2019 Honda Odyssey.
Price
Straight out of the blocks, this is a big win for the Grand Caravan over the Honda Odyssey. Most families are working on a budget, and when it comes to ferrying around up to seven people and all their stuff, it can be done a lot more affordably with the Dodge than with the Honda. The lowest MSRP you can get an Odyssey for is $35,290, but you can get your family into a Dodge Grand Caravan for as little as $25,195 before any discounts or special offers.
Engines
Both models come standard with powerful and capable V-6 engines. In the case of the Honda, it's a 3.5-litre V-6 that develops 280 horsepower, but the Grand Caravan sees it and raises it slightly with a 3.6-litre V-6 that puts out 283 horsepower. Admittedly, that's not a great deal of difference, but the Grand Caravan's engine is every bit as good as the Honda's for considerably less money.
Infotainment
There are lots of features that are important to families when it comes to buying a new vehicle, but these days there are few that are more important, especially to passengers, than infotainment. Base LX versions of the Honda Odyssey only get a 5.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, while entry-level SE versions of the Grand Caravan come with a much larger 6.5-inch touchscreen.
Interiors
Regardless of how they appear on the outside, the interior matters more when it comes to minivans. The Honda's interior has a slight edge in terms of comfort and quality, but for a lot of minivan buyers flexibility is all-important, and the Grand Caravan is still the best in this area. Even the base model comes with a second-row bench seat and third-row Stow 'n Go 60/40 split-folding seats with tailgate seating, and higher trims get even greater flexibility for mixing cargo and passenger loads.
Verdict
The 2019 Honda Odyssey is a very good minivan and to some eyes, it might be the more stylish option here. However, for families on a budget, it's impossible to ignore the staggeringly good value and the all-around flexibility of the 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan.
